For the first time, Mississippi University Libraries will help digitize historical records mentioning Mississippi slaves and make them searchable and available online for genealogists. The name of the digitization project is the Lantern Project and is funded by the National Historic Publications and Records Commission of the National Archives. The planned database with be indexed by names of slaves, their ages and physical description. The data will be abstracted from 19th century probates, wills, bill of sales and court records. One of the goals of the Lantern Project is to help African American genealogists reconstruct genealogies broken by the institution of slavery.
