While I was working on the desk schedule, I began to look
for a graphic to add to Friday 10 NOV 2017 to indicate we were closed to
celebrate Veterans Day. As I looked I found that there are at least 3
days that celebrate Veterans, and that three are very common to one another,
and at times, mistaken for the specific observance objective.
Just in case you were wondering.......
Armed Forces Day was first observed on 20 May 1950. The
day was created on 31 August 1949, to honor Americans serving in the five U.S.
military branches – the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S.
Air Force and U.S. Coast Guard – following the consolidation of
the military services in the U.S. Department of Defense. It was intended
to replace the separate Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard
Days, but the separate days are still observed, especially within the
respective services.
Honors those currently serving in the Armed Forces.
Memorial Day or Decoration Day is a federal
holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while
serving in the country's armed forces. The holiday, which is
currently observed every year on the last Monday of May, was held on May 29,
2017. The holiday was held on May 30 from 1868 to 1970. It marks the start
of the unofficial summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks
its end.
Honors those who died in service to our Nation.
Veterans Day is an official United States public
holiday, observed annually on November 11, that honors military veterans;
that is, persons who served in the United States Armed Forces.
It coincides with other holidays, including Armistice
Day and Remembrance Day, celebrated in other countries that mark the
anniversary of the end of World War I; major hostilities of World War I
were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918,
when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. The United States
previously observed Armistice Day. The U.S. holiday was renamed Veterans Day in
1954.
Veterans Day celebrates the service of all living U.S. military veterans who once served in the Armed Forces.
